Register as an organ and tissue donor today at DonateLifeFlorida.org.
On April 3, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford, Escambia County Commissioner Doug Underhill, Escambia School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas and Chief Deputy Chip Simmons of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office will celebrate National Donate Life Month in Escambia County with a kick-off and “pelican unveiling” event in the courthouse complex courtyard, next to the tax collector’s downtown office at 213 Palafox Place.
This event and ensuing month-long celebration is designed to raise awareness of the life-saving role that residents of Escambia County can play by registering as an organ, tissue and eye donor. During National Donate Life Month, tax collector employees are participating in the annual Donate Life Challenge, a month-long effort among tax collectors and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to promote awareness of Florida’s organ donor registry.
“We are excited to unveil the new Donate Life pelican at this event. It will stand as a reminder to everyone of how important organ donation is for our community,” said Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford. “I am honored that my offices are part of such an important awareness campaign.”
“We are proud that in 2017 Escambia County remained in the top 10 counties statewide in the donor designation rate, and 59 percent of individuals visiting our office to get their driver license or identification card signed up to donate,” Lunsford continued. “We hope to increase that percentage this year.”
Tax collector employees help register potential organ donors by asking all driver license customers if they would like to join the registry. Eighty-five percent of Florida’s donor registrations now occur through driver license transactions. Donate Life Florida hit the 10 million donor mark this month and is the nation’s third largest registry. One person can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance dozens more through tissue and eye donation.
Florida offers three simple ways to register as an organ, tissue or eye donor:
- On Donate Life Florida’s website at DonateLifeFlorida.org.
- When renewing your driver license or identification card online at GoRenew.com.
- When obtaining a new or renewed driver license or identification card in one of our tax collector offices.
