Effective July 1, 2023, applicants for a Florida vessel title must click here and complete HSMV Form 82040- VS (revised 07/01/2023). Please complete this form prior to visiting an office. Older versions of form 82040-Vs are obsolete and no longer accepted.
In addition, you will need:
- Original Florida title properly completed by buyer(s) and seller(s).
- All applicants (purchasers) for title must sign the initial Application for Florida Title (HSMV 82040) or be present in our office. If an applicant is unable to come in, he or she may provide a completed Power of Attorney (HSMV 82053) to the applicant visiting our office so that the applicant may sign the application on the missing applicant’s behalf.
- U.S. Driver’s License, U.S. Identification card, or valid passport for each owner (see below for more information).
Transactions involving a trust or inheritance, as well as any other non-standard situation, will require additional documents.

Vehicle Registration
Defines “valid passport”
As of September 23, 2024, customers filing an application for a vehicle registration must provide a valid driver license or identification card issue by the state of Florida or another U.S. State or territory, or a valid passport which is now defined as:
An unexpired passport or passport card issued by the United States government; or
An unexpired passport issued by the government of another country with:A stamp or mark affixed by the
United States Department of Homeland Security onto the passport to evidence and authorize lawful presence in the United States; or
An unexpired I-94 or current permanent resident card, or unexpired immigrant visa, issued by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
